Bhutan Incense |

Bhutan - land of the Thunder Dragon. This beautiful and rarely visited Kingdom nestles in the east Himalayas, bordered by neighboring countries Tibet and India. Until the early 1960s it was accessible only by foot though the high mountain passes of Tibet or across the northern plains of India. For centuries, pilgrims and travelers have come to these mountains in a personal quest for enlightenment, peace and inspiration.
Throughout it's history, incense making and incense burning have been an integral part of the Bhutanese Buddhist culture. Incense is used in Bhutan for many purposes - meditation, devotion, healing and purification; it is unquestionably a deeply rooted component of everyday life in Bhutan.

Nado Poi Zokhang
|
A family run business, Nado Poizokhang is the oldest and the largest hand-made incense sticks manufacturer in Bhutan.
Founder Mr Nado began making incense in the 1960s with the encouragement of his abbot, the Gelong Nerchendrep Tshering Dorji. As a result of his training, all Nado Poizokhang incense products are made in strict accordance to ancient Buddhist scripture governing the materials used and the method by which sticks and powders are made. The recipes - some of which date back over 700 years - incorporate flowers, barks, woods, leaves, fruit, and roots, all organically grown. Most Nado incense products use approximately 40 ingredients while some special ceremonial incenses use 108 natural ingredients - an auspicious number to Buddhists. Many of the natural products used grow above 4000 meters and are collected by yak herders and families who live high in the remote Himalayas.
The main ingredients of the incense include sandalwood, clove, red sandal, cardamom, saffron, nutmeg, agarwood, pure honey, cane sugar, gum dammar, spikenard, camphor and juniper powder. To these are also added a wide range of other Bhutanese herbs and plants. All Nado Zimpoe (Palace incense) have the same ingredients with Juniper used for the base. The higher the grade of the incense, the less juniper is used.
Nado works closely with the Community Based Sustainable Management of Medicinal Plants Project whose mission is to educate collectors in the sustainable collection and cultivation of natural products. |

Lhawang Driden, a small family owned business is located in the Wangdue Phograng district of central Bhutan. This Bhutanese incense is manufactured in the strict Buddhist traditional method. Over 30 rare ingredients are used in making Lhawang incense, including all natural woods, barks and herbs found in the remote Himalayas.

Tsenden Poe Zokhang
|
Located in Paro, Bhutan, Tsenden Poe Zokhang offers Bhutanese incense sticks in single fragrances as well assortment packs. Buddhist scriptures require the separation of incense made with (Kriya tantra) and without (Upa tantra) animal, fish or alcohol products, and all Tsenden incense products are made accordingly.
Ingredients include agarwood, gentiana crassoloides, bibhitaka, haritaki, juniper and cypress. |
