Preparing Censer (Koh Do cup) for Koh Do Ceremony
Koh-Doh Style Burning of Incense Woods & Incense

Koh Doh incense burning
The above Drawing illustrates the steps involved and the directions are written below.

1. Fill the Censer (Koh Do cup) two-thirds full of white rice ash
2. Heat a piece of Charcoal until it is grayish white all over
3. Fluff the ash so that it's not compacted
4. Place the charcoal in the center of the censer on top of the ash
5. Push the charcoal down in the ash so that it's halfway down in the cup
6. Cover the charcoal with the ash, forming a mound or cone on top
7. Slightly tamp and compress the ash into the cone shape with the ash press or butter knife
8. With a metal chopstick or skewer, gently make an air hole to the charcoal
9. Place the mica plate gently on top of the air hole and press down softly
10. Place a piece of Jinkoh, Sandalwood, Aloeswood or other (herb, loose) incense material on the mica plate

Use any of the following incense for burning Kohdoh style:
  • Aloeswood Chunks (raw): available in Vietnamese and Indonesian aloeswood blends
  • Jinkoh incense: available in regular Jinko and Extra Jinko blends
  • Raw Botanicals incense: available in Clove, Cassia, Star anise, Chinese herbs and more

 

Sonae Koh (Traditional Buddhist Incense Burning)

  • Fill the bowl with rice chaff Ash to the widest point. Lightly tap the bowl on a flat surface to level out the ash.

  • Place Koh press down in the ash to make a depression and lift back out.

  • Fill depression with makko powder Place the Koh press lightly on top of the makko to compress, and then remove.

  • Pictured is makko after it has been compressed slightly.

  • Light a 1" piece of incense stick, press soflty against the side of the censer to bend gently. Then place lit end down into the makko. Twist to break off tip and place the stick on top of the makko. Start at the end of depression--bottom right. The makko will begin to to burn and you can place loose incense, shokoh, aloeswood chips, or sandalwood chips on top of the burning makko. Only place ingredients on the burning part and continue as it burns around the censer

Makko Base Powder (#33823 )
This product is traditionally used to prolong an incense burn and enhance the actual fragrance. Baieido White Rice Ash is to be used as a foundation for the Makko when burning any natural resin, herb or loose incense. You have the freedom to use as much or as little desired.
